On 21 March, 2025, the Hungarian Soil Science Society (MTT) organized a nationwide awareness-raising campaign titled “SOIL Beneath Your Feet”. The event aimed to highlight the condition and importance of our arable soils, as well as the complex challenges posed by soil degradation, which affect not only our country but the population of the entire planet.
As part of the campaign, soil science experts from the Society conducted on-site presentations in various parts of the country. During these events, they excavated and showcased soil profiles, provided detailed explanations of soil functions and characteristics, and answered questions from attendees eager to learn more about this vital natural resource.
Experts from AKI (Institute of Agricultural Economics) participated as representatives of the ITE (Innovation and Digitalization Support Unit) and Soil-X-Change projects, joining students from the Magyar Gyula Horticultural Technical and Vocational School in the practice garden of the school. The soil profile was presented by Dr. Borbála Bíró, professor from MATE (Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences), who engagingly and interactively demonstrated the rich and diverse ecosystem within the soil.
As usual the crew of Agroinform.hu reported on the campaign day from several locations and broadcast the events live this year, too. The webinar can be watched here.
We believe that this initiative has successfully contributed to raising awareness about soil conservation and drawing attention to the urgent challenges posed by soil degradation.
