Project summary

As of November 1, 2023, AKI will participate in the implementation of the Nenuphar project as a consortium member. The goal of the Nenuphar project is to develop new regulatory models that help reduce nutrient pollution. Nutrients, especially excess nitrogen and phosphorus, are also one of the main sources of pollution at the EU level, but at the same time, there is a significant unused potential in the recovery and reuse of nitrogen and phosphorus. The project will develop new management and value chain solutions that deal with three waste streams with high nutrient loads: manure, sewage sludge and dairy wastewater. The NENUPHAR project wants to achieve innovation in four main areas:

  • Development of a methodology for estimating nitrogen/phosphorus emissions resulting from the application of fertilizer to the soil, which enables more effective control and monitoring of nutrient pollution.
  • Development of new management models based on a network management approach.
  • Development of innovative economic and financial incentives.
  • Development and testing of new technologies enabling the treatment of manure, sludge and dairy waste water in order to recover nutrient loads.

The new methods and approaches are tested in three different regional clusters, each of which focuses on individual waste streams, demonstrating the reduced environmental impact of pollution. The project also aims to create new, circular value chains and promote cooperation between different stakeholders. AKI is primarily involved in the creation of the new regulatory background and as Work Package leader (WP6) in the implementation of capacity building tasks.
